In the middle of the deep blue Atlantic Ocean between Portugal and North America lie the islands of the Azores.
The Atlantic Ocean around Pico is one of the best areas in the world for spotting blue sharks, mako sharks, sperm whales, blue whales, schools of dolphins, marlins and round-headed dolphins, for example, and offers a unique variety of species to discover.
Up to 30 different species of whales and dolphins can be found around the Azores.

THE AZORES
An Eldorado for divers, snorkelers & hikers
Whether you want to travel to the Azores for diving, snorkeling, hiking or island tours, this unique destination will delight divers and nature lovers alike.
The bizarre volcanic landscapes, lush green pastures and vineyards, hydrangea bushes and the highest mountain in Portugal - Pico at 2,351 meters - make a trip to the Azores something very special, even for non-divers.
ACTIVITIES IN & AROUND PICO
HAITAUCHEN
The Azores are known for their fascinating dives with blue & mako sharks in crystal clear water with visibility of up to 20 - 30+ meters. The best months for diving are from the beginning of July to mid-October, when the water temperature is between 21° and 25° Celsius.
COASTAL DIVES
The diverse, volcanic underwater landscape of the islands of Pico, Fajal and Sao Jorge with their numerous and varied creatures - from giant stingrays to graceful nudibranchs - will amaze more than just professional underwater photographers.
The narrow coastal shelf, steep walls, canyons & drop-offs bring coastal, open water and deep sea habitats into close proximity, so literally almost anything could come up on a dive!
Even less experienced divers will be surprised by the variety of dive sites. Even if you are not yet a diver, Pico offers the perfect opportunity to learn.
PRINCESS ALICE
During expeditions to the world-famous dive site "Princess Alice", the top of an underwater mountain in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, which extends 1,000 meters out of the depths, majestic mobulas, mackerel, large tuna and barracudas teem with life.
The success rate of encountering these beautiful animals is almost 100% in the months between July and September. The site is around 85 km from Pico and you should be prepared for a long, adventurous offshore trip in a rubber dinghy.
ISLAND TOURS
Whether by car, scooter or quad bike, Pico is perfect for exploring on your own. Of course, guided island tours are also offered to explore the most beautiful places, museums or bathing spots during a discovery tour.
SWIMMING & BATHING
Even if you don't necessarily find the classic sandy beaches on Pico, there are still plenty of breathtaking bathing opportunities. Many of the bathing spots are protected from the Atlantic surf by offshore reefs or walls.
HIKING
The most beautiful routes on the island of Pico can be discovered on leisurely walks as well as challenging day or multi-day hikes.
CALMA DO MAR
The cozy bed and breakfast on the island of Pico
The cozy, family-run bed and breakfast "Calma do Mar" is located in Madalena on the Azorean island of Pico and promises an unforgettable vacation that you can arrange flexibly and according to your own wishes.
The guest house is equipped with all amenities and has a kitchen, which is at the free disposal of every guest after breakfast, a cozy living room with fireplace and a library with books to learn more about the island of Pico and the possible activities.
In the garden and on the terrace, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pico mountain and the Atlantic Ocean while relaxing together. Here you will find comfortable sun loungers and a barbecue area, which you are welcome to use at any time.
Every morning you can look forward to an extensive breakfast buffet with lots of fresh and, above all, regional products. In addition to a wide variety of cheeses produced in the Azores, there are many seasonal fruits such as bananas, oranges, figs and pineapple. Even Azorean tea finds its way onto our buffet.
The hosts' greatest concern is that their guests feel at home at Calma do Mar and find rest and relaxation.
The Atlantic Ocean & natural swimming pools are less than 100m from the guest house.
The diving center, harbour, cafés and restaurants are in the immediate vicinity.
